Biography
The Sentinel Purge is a time that will forever be remembered by both the dying world and the annals of history. While many heroes died during the third world war, there were a handful that remained, struggling until the very end to defend the frightened citizens from annihilation. One of these heroes known only as “Hax” spent the last days of his life evacuating and protecting civilians targeted by the sentinels. In the end the hero saved many lives but died at the hands of the sentinels. However, while the hero is remembered as a good man that gave his all, mega corporations such as AIM saw an even greater potential.
Having a natural intuition and applied education in machines and magic, the hero Hax had spent time trying to develop a way to control sentinels or even re-create sentinels that would serve as a first and last line of defense. Unfortunately, the hero had neither the time nor resources to properly develop this idea, but AIM knew that his knowledge and natural aptitude with technology would be a great asset if they were to try developing sentinels of their own. Since the discovery of the genetic arks, AIM like most mega corporations staked ownership on as many arks as possible with the overall idea of recreating the best of the best to serve in their ranks. In one the arks AIM hit one of their jackpots; a genetic profile of the Hax individual, but with one problem. The template for the Hax profile was incomplete and thus incredibly difficult to successfully clone, but with vast resources AIM had only to wait until their cloning processes yielded a success.
Decades later, AIM had yet to clone a profile that was within their ideal percentiles of the original Hax, but AIM had managed to clone with creative splicing and virtual reality simulators a handful of individuals similar to the Hax profile. While these individuals do not possess the exact memories of the original (AIM’s research on the Hax individual is only so complete) they do have the same aptitude for technology and magic. Picking the best and brightest from their batches, AIM placed three in charge of various research projects related to sentinels while the rest were returned to the cloning research facilities to better replicate their success. As one of the only presumably alive clones, 40-4 was in charge of the project team researching how the sentinels were made in order to replicate their creation. While simply a tool for AIM, because each of their successful clones were precious, 40-4 was given every accommodation as well as access to AIM’s best resources in order to further their goals. For a scientist 40-4 lived like a king. So why did he choose to go AWOL?
For someone who cared very little for human company 40-4 made an unlikely accomplice. Test Subject 5 for the AIDOS project who had been cloned to pilot the reacquired AIDOS suit had been along with 40-4 deemed a waste of resources and AIM would be phasing both projects out for good. This generally means an abrupt and mortally inconvenient “early retirement” for all non-essential or dangerous personnel involved with these projects. In light of this news 40-4 was very concerned. Afterall, he was planning on leaving anyway with his research coming to a dead end without at least an actual piece of sentinel tech, something that not even AIM’s vast resources could procure for 40-4. The news simply made the choice to leave easier, and with Subject 5 already planning an escape of his own 40-4 made a deal that would help both men escape to pursue their own interests.
After escaping the AIM facility, both 40-4 and Subject 5 kept travelling together as partners in crime with Subject 5 “repoing” technology from various “clients” and 40-4 maintaining and modifying the technology for black markets. With a steady cash flow 40-4 is able to keep a supply of his medication as well as fund his efforts to finally obtain or locate a sentinel and continue his research.
Themesong
Aspects
High Concept:
Reality Hacking Inventor
40-4 is a mutant who bends reality to his will by using a sophisticated form of rune magic to create spells. Unlike most forms of rune magic, 40-4 is able to "code" a spell in a special magical computer that appears over his forearm allowing him to create spells on the fly.
Trouble:
"Come Back We Need You!"
Since his departure from AIM (he did put in his two weeks, albeit encrypted in a dead language), 40-4 has become good at dodging his desperate, former employer or really anyone who wants to find him. AIM spent countless resources both creating 40-4 and supporting his research. So, to say AIM is scouring the earth for 40-4 is an understatement as he is both an invaluable asset and important key to furthering their sentinel research.
Trapper
One of the few activities 40-4 takes great pleasure in are practical pranks. Since he left the test tube, 40-4 has be known by AIM operatives to be a notorious prankster creating more sophisticated ways and complex spells to get a cheap laugh at his associates' expense. When it came time to leave AIM, 40-4 utilized his vast experience to makes his "pranks" significantly more lethal.
Deaf As a Doorknob
Defects in clones from the Hax profile are common. For 40-4 one of his defects is being unable to hear. To compensate for his inability, 40-4 learned to communicate and interact with the world in various ways such as reading lips, using his magic to speak for him, or even paying more attention to vibrations in his surroundings.
Sentinel Expert
40-4 has devoted all of his waking life to researching the Sentinel Project, more specifically how the sentinels themselves may have been made. While he certainly doesn't have any concrete answers on how to replicate sentinels, 40-4 does have extensive knowledge on the history of the project as well as multiple working theories about sentinel manufacturing; all thanks to the morally bankrupt curiosity of AIM and their vast network of resources.
Skills
Stunts
Description: As 40-4 has perfected his craft, so has his ability to selectively target a single person from a crowd for his mostly harmless "pranks".
Mechanical Effect: When using Crafts in a conflict involving machinery, you can filter out unwanted targets from whole-zone attacks without having to divide up your shifts (normally, you’d need to divide your roll between your targets).
Stunt Cost: 1
Power Suite One: The Reality Gauntlet
Subject 40-4 wields a variant of the magic used by the original "Hax" individual. Willing a hard-light-like projection around his left arm, 40-4 can perform impossible feats by using a magic-tech hybrid in the form of runes that lay along the gauntlet. The end result is a power that lets 40-4 hack reality in order to achieve the outcome he desires. Like a blast of spontaneous energy to the guy's face. Or that guy. Yeah, that guy right there. He's going to fall into a trap that creates a sudden, unexpected pit-fall. When reality can be re-written and the tools at your fingertips, 40-4 can certainly overcome most odds.
Power Breakdown
- Energy Blast - Make Shoot attacks with a range of up to 3 zones.
- Gadgeteering - +2 Crafts to build or repair complex devices. Know the general function of a machine just by looking at it.
- Master Gadgeteering - +2 Crafts when repairing or building complex devices.
- Shielding - Create a barrier between zones. Attacks through it are defended with your Will. Successful attacks do mental stress to you or shatter the barrier and do half mental stress. Each barrier after the first gives you a Will penalty of -1.
- Precision Shielding - You may shield a specific human sized target instead of a whole zone.
- Opaque Shields - Your shields may be transparent, opaque or anything in between.
- Theme: Chaos Conduit (Mutant Only) - Your powers are accompanied by manifestations of chaos such as lights, minor fortean phenomena and similar.
- Realm Warp - Create advantages on the scene using Will to represent reality manipulations. Aspects like 'No Gravity' in a small area have Fair (+2) opposition. Larger or more complex effects have higher opposition.
Special Effects
- Forced Movement - You move your target up to two zones
- Area Attack - Attack everyone in a zone
Drawbacks
- Twilight Life - Due to an imperfect cloning process, 40-4's genetics aren't always stable. As such 40-4 must consistently take a medication to keep his body from failing, but even so most clones like 40-4 won't live longer than three or four decades. - Must consistently take medication. Not taking medication at the appropriate times will cause Subject 40-4 to accumulate physical stress.
Collateral Damage
- The Reality Gun - 40-4 uses a powerful spell to alter reality in the form of a giant gun. During this time almost anything for 40-4 is possible both good and bad. Receive the Reality Control aspect with 4 free invokes. As a result of flipping probabilities on themselves, both 40-4 and those caught in the area are susceptible to freak, statistically improbable occurrences. - Receive the Reality Control aspect with 4 free invokes.
