Miah sneezes. His sense of smell is slowly coming back, emphasis on slowly. He still can’t smell most things and it’s kind of got him discombobulated a lot in daily life. Humans might not think it that problematic but it really is kind of like being blind for the big black werewolf.
Right now though his biggest problem is that his nose tickles. It has him sitting at the table, head bonlessly laid on it, ears laid back. He does not like this.
He sneezes again and sighs.
Brinley does //not// like Miahs discomfit at all and it shows in the way the human woman has been prowling their apartment. At the first sneeze, she wanders over to him, looks down at the big lupine head on the table and … pets him. Like a puppy.
Her mind reaches out to, sending a wave of … comfort … in his direction. “I’m sorry, Miah. Would you like a cookie?”
Miah looks over at Brinley. Looks is… well maybe an overstatement. He moves his eyes when she reaches out to pet him. The petting does help a bit. He can’t stop sneezing and it’s just the slightest bit miserable.
“… … … yes…” They should have some cookies nearby. Peanutbutter. His favorite.
“I might be able to smell a little now.” He can, but it’s only a little. nowhere near the sensitivity he’d had earlier.
Brin strokes Miahs ears, even laid back on his head as they are and pads off again to find the cookies they have. Yes, there’s peanut butter – Miah can have all the ones he wants of those, Brins human nose wrinkles at the thought. And there’s mint chocolate. Brins favourites.
Popping one of her cookies in her mouth, she pads on back, her bare feet ‘ticking’ quietly over the linoleum floor. The bag is placed on the table and one of the delicious goodness is waggled in front of his nose.
“If you can, you should be able to tell me what the new soap is …” she teases. She never wears heavy fragrances but they’re heavy enough for the lupine.
“Lavendar.” He sounds slightly congested. He’s not really, he can breathe just find but the constant sneezing is doing him in. The brown werewolf takes a cookie and slips it into his mouth, never once lifting his head.
It tastes good. He chews, swallows… and then sneezes again.
“I talked to a couple of friends about Kyle’s solar panel… not good news.”
Brin rolls her eyes and nibbles at her own cookie, taking another peanut butter to wave under Miah’s nose again. “I said new soap, not my old one…” As she finishes her cookie, she strokes his ears again and leans against the were-wolf a bit.
He looks so sad and dejected. Like a recalcitrant puppy.
“I’m sure it isn’t Miah. That thing didn’t look cheap. But what did they say?”
“Peanutbutter.” Miah snorts and takes another cookie, licking it right out of Brin’s hand.
He does look sad and dejected. He doesn’t like sneezing this much.
“Not just expensive, near impossible to get without stealing it from somewhere. High efficiency solar panels are still big corp projects. And fixing them is almost as bad as getting new ones. We don’t have the resources to do either…”
That means if they want to fix Kyle’s wheels they’ll need a thrid option but Miah has no idea what that might be.
“Nooooo…” Brin chuffs a bit as Miah licks the cookie out of her hand, wiping the back of it on his fur before reaching for another one. “… you’ll know you’re better when you can smell it.” she says quietly, stroking his ears and letting comfort roll over him.
It’s a very light lemon scent. Fresh and clean. It will be difficult to smell under good circumstances, now? She’s not surprised he can’t.
“Are you going to lay there like or are you going to let me sit down …” the words are quiet.
Miah will feel the concern as he speaks on the solar panels and the small dusky skinned woman considers “We steal them then…” That might shock him.
Miah can’t smell it over the peanutbutter. Truth be told his nose would have to be right on her to figure it out right now.
He looks up at the smaller wolf woman when she makes her decision and finally sits up so she can set down with him.
“Around here that means stealing them off someone’s building and that means someone going without power or hot water. To get them otherwise, we’d have to get them off the corps. And those buildings will be guarded. I don’t think stealing them is really an option, Brin.”
As Miah sits up, Brin pushes his arms back and sets herself firmly in his lap. She’s strokes his ear and down the stop of his muzzle. She really does feel for bad him but there’s little be done except … pet him.
“I didn’t mean steal from here but there must be a depot or somewhere that the Corps use …” But he says that’s a bad idea. “So we just have to earn more money or find a job that will trade our labour for a panel.”
“Out in the sprawl?” Miah shakes his head. “A few but they’re guarded. Corps don’t leave their toys where just anyone can get to them. And if we DID pull it off they’d hunt us down. It’s not worth it.”
He’s very emphatic on ‘not worth it.’
His ear flicks as she pets him and he thinks. “There might be a mutant, though. Someone with a lot of skill with tech? I know they’re out there.” It’s kind of a longshot but the first stop would be Rocky and Monica for that.
“Well not in the Sprawl but in the fringe of the city ….” Brin peters off as she strokes Miah’s ears, smiling a bit as they flick. It’s going to take him a moment to work out that she’s doing that deliberately.
She’s easily amused.
“Alright then.” she finally says watching his face as he thinks “We can ask around, I’ve heard of them but most don’t stick around the Sprawl if they have that type of skill, Monica and Rocky might now. Gretchen too. Do you want to go talk to Monica now, or wait till your sense of smell is much better?”
“I’d rather wait to be honest…” Miah says and takes another bite of cookie. His ear flicks again. And then again. And then he kind of… looks at her. She’s doing that… deliberately, yes.
“But we shouldn’t make Kyle wait just because I’m… sick. We can go talk to them soon.”
Monica responds well to Brinley anyway.
“Keep eating the cookies and I’ll make you go for another run …” Brin returns Miah’s look with an innocent one of her own. She doesn’t stop stroking his ears though.
“We can wait. Another day or two won’t hurt and maybe we could go and see Dora in the meantime.”
Or have Dora come here.
And yes, Monica responds well to Brinley, even if the Empath isn’t entirely aware it.
“I think I will…” He’ll go run anyway. It’s second nature and it feels good. And Miah has no reason to think that any of that is a problem. For now.
“Dora would probably come see us here. I’ll give her a call.” The brown wolf finally stops taking cookies…
… and sneezes again.
“Oy… kill me.”
“I can think of ways to distract you …” Brin smiles, finally leave his ears along. “You’re getting better though Miah and this won’t last long.”
“Please call her. I I … want to find out what’s happened to me.” She knows it’s going to hurt but it seems important that they find out what she is.
“Come on … ” she slides from his lap and tugs on him. What distraction might she have? There’s that window in the bathroom that’s needed fixing … forever. Perhaps its that.
